I Want To Be Poor
Now there are not many people on this planet who would say that I don’t suppose. They are not likely to be consciously accept that they want to be poor but maybe unconsciously they believe something like that. Maybe they believe that they deserve to be poor, or that they don’t deserve to be rich. Why ?
Poverty Consciousness
Some people are born rich and some are born poor but that does not need to determine their future (although in many cases, it does).
A survey in America looked at people’s financial status over a 40 year period from when they started working until when they retired. This is what they discovered. In a group of 100 people,
- Only 1 will be wealthy
- 4 will be financially secure
- 5 will continue working, not because they want to but because they have to
- 36 will be dead
- 54 will be broke - dependent on Social Security, relatives, friends and even charity for a minimum standard of living.
So, if this is right, then only 5% of people are financially healthy by the time they reach retirement. I find that quite hard to believe and it is quite shocking if true.
What About You ?
Do you want to be in that top 5% ? What is your attitude towards money ? Do you think money is bad or that only callous, heartless people get rich ? What do you believe deep down ?
Money, in and of itself, is not bad. It’s what you do with money that is good or bad.
So, if you had money, what would you do with it ? Maybe that’s the stumbling block for some people - it’s the responsibility of deciding what to do with money. If you only have money enough to eat and have a roof over your head that there are no big decisions to be made about what to do with your money. But if you have money to provide food, clothing and shelter and money left over, what should you do with it ?
So many people do the lottery, hoping to win millions, but I would be surprised if any of them had a clear idea of what they would do with the millions if they won it.
An Exercise
Get a pen and paper and write down what you would do if you had a million pounds. Be realistic. Then, once you’ve done it, decide if each one of the items is good or bad. Good things would be ones that develop you, help others, provide for family and friends. Bad things would be ones that damage you, or damage others or damage the environment. Do you want to change anything on your list ?
Has this helped you change you mind about money ? Could you break out of that poverty consciousness and see the possibility of something more ? Could it be that you deserve to be rich ? Read this article about what being rich means.
