Listening To Your Intuition

Published by Roger at 5:18 pm under Personal Development

A while ago, I wrote a post called How To Really Listen To Someone. This post is more about listening to yourself than anyone else !

Voices In My Head

Get in tune with your intuition
Get in tune with your Intuition

It seems to me that we have several voices going on inside us (I’m assuming it’s the same for all of us, not just me !). I have a critical voice in my head that sometimes likes to point out my mistakes and put me down. I have a voice that praises me for things I do and there are others with different desires, needs etc. I refer to this motley collection of ‘people’ as my sub-personalities. I realise this may not be within any accepted definition of that term, however… I am thinking of writing more about this area soon.

Today, however, I want to focus on one of those voices which, I think, is more knowledgeable, has more truth, greater understanding and which is much more useful to us, than all the others put together.

Intuition
Yes, intuition is that ‘voice’ which really knows what’s going on and what is best for us - at least, that’s what I believe. How it knows and where it gets its information from, I do not know and the best we can do is speculate. And, that’s not the most important aspect of intuition in my view. The most important aspect is finding a way to listen to that voice.

I don’t know what it’s like for you but I would guess that, like me, you have a lot of chatter going on in your head. Lots of lists of things you need to do, lists of things you should have done, plans, projects, anxieties, what ifs etc all whizzing around and competing for brain space.

In those circumstances the voice of intuition gets drowned out by the other louder voices and yet it is the voice of intuition which is probably the one with the most useful information.

How To Listen
I’m sure there are loads of different ways to listen to one’s intuition. Many people, I imagine, would suggest meditation. There’s no one right way - whatever way works for you is the right way. I’m no expert in this area and I have been conscious for several years now that I would benefit from listening to and acting on my intuition more. (This has often appeared as a New Year’s Resolution !) At times, I have felt I have been making progress and at other times, less so. At the moment, I’m in a good period with listening to my intuition. This is what I am doing which helps:

  • Walking/ambling in the park nearby for about 15 minutes every day and noticing what’s going on in my head.
  • Lying down and consciously breathing deeply for 10 minutes twice a day and making notes on what I’m thinking about.
  • Noticing if I feel I should be doing something or going somewhere and then acting on those impulses, especially if they don’t make much sense.

The last one, perhaps, needs a bit more explanation. My assumption is that, if I have an idea to do something and it makes perfect sense, then that is a logical part of me speaking - which, of course, is fine and I may (probably will) act on that. However, if the impulse is not that logical, then my assumption is that it comes from my intuition and so deserves my attention more.

I don’t want to pretend that my life is dominated by my intuition - it certainly isn’t. However, I am getting better at listening to its voice and taking steps to act on it.

How Do You Listen To Your Intuition ?
I’d be very interested to hear what you do to allow your intuitive voice to be heard. I’d like to try some different methods. I’m not good with routine, so changing from one method to another from time to time is likely to be useful for me. Please do send me your suggestions, thoughts, comments etc.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the good post. I also believe that Intuition can be developed by anybody by listening to his/her mind. They can guide you in the right path. I do walking and talking with my inner selves to find, what’s good for me. The only thing we need, which I feel is ‘Time’ to talk to ourselves.

    Nice thinking, Roger.

Sometimes, many times probably, I can’t tell the difference between useful intuition in my head or wild ideas. Of course, wild ideas can turn into something useful, but they can just as likely be fleeting thoughts, at least for me. So when a really wild idea flits through my mind, I usually sit on it for a while, to see if it comes back. If it keeps coming back, no matter how wild it might seem, I take some time to really think about it. Maybe it’s trying to tell me something!

Hi Anjul. For me the issue has been finding the time ! Even though I believe that my intuition works for my greater good and has useful things to tell me, I can still resist making the time to listen. Makes no logical sense ! I am doing a lot better now as I mentioned in the post. I’d be interested to know how you talk to your inner selves. What sort of dialogue do you have ?

Yes, Mike, I like that notion of seeing if a wild idea comes back. I do wonder though whether all wild ideas (unless they’re downright dangerous or damaging to others) are intuition. I’m not sure yet - still working with it. I’m trying to follow every small hunch at the moment. Last week I was walking through a town near here and got a feeling I should go into a hotel I was passing just to ‘have a look’. I went in and was greeted by a older guy who worked there who told stories about old traditions. No idea why he was saying this or what it had to do with me. It was an unusual experience and I’m still waiting to find out why I did that. And, I do think there was a reason - I just don’t know what it is yet !

Good article. I think listening to your intuition is like a muscle that you can develop over time. It definitely can help improve our lives

Hi Tejvan. I like your analogy of intuition like a muscle that can be developed. Thanks, Roger
