Guilty Or Not Guilty. Does It Matter ?
Do you ever feel guilty about anything ? Do thoughts of that distract you, hold you back, make you worry about what other people may think about you ? Are you holding on to a guilty secret ? What effect is that having on your life now ?
Childhood Messages
What negative attitudes are you carrying with you today from your childhood ? I was very fortunate to have a relatively happy childhood and I still carry messages with me from that time that hold me back. I am becoming more aware of them so they don’t now have the same sort of hold over me, and they’re still there.
I remember years ago when my kids were little and they were in the bath together. I suppose they would have been 4 and 6 maybe. There were bubbles in the bath and they were playing with them and they were getting more excited and some water and bubbles were coming over the side of the bath. They were having fun. My immediate thought was to say, ‘Stop that, calm down’. However, I stopped myself and I’m pleased I did. The small amount of water and bubbles on the floor really didn’t matter. The voice that first came to me came from my childhood. I imagine I was going to repeat what had been said to me once upon a time or at least I was duplicating an attitude from my childhood. This is a small and simple example. What other tapes are playing in our heads that were recorded in childhood ?
What childhood programming did you receive ? Some of these maybe ?
- Children should be seen and not heard
- That’s not good enough
- Eat up everything that’s on your plate
- Etc.
What were yours ? Please drop me a comment and let me know.
Looking To The Future
Some of the messages we received in childhood are undoubtedly helpful and some are not. Attention and awareness are needed to get away from the negative ones. The chances are these are holding you back in some way and preventing you from having as much freedom and happiness in your life as you could.
So, guilt is in the past and negative childhood programming is in the past. It is much better, in my opinion to focus on the future. Like I was saying yesterday, be clear and definite about what makes you happy and focus on that. Richard Wilkins would say that it’s like planting seeds in the future. By keeping focussed on the things you want, you revisit those ‘seeds’ and tend them so they can grow and become reality.
Here’s a quote from Richard Wilkins (not sure if I’ve got the words exactly right here but it’s something like this) - I choose to be happy because I don’t like the alternatives.
