The Law of Similars and Onward
By Megan Jones
German physician Samuel Hahnemann came up with the original form of alternative medicine known as homeopathy, and additionally founded the Law of Similars, which indicated that “like cures like”. The law literally states that “that which makes sick shall heal” in the suggestion that the symptoms that are caused by an overdose of a substance can also be cured with a small dosage. While this remedy was practiced years ago in classical Greece, Hahnemann was the first to formulate it in terms of the modern methods we know today during the 18th century.

This holistic approach to medicine has been a part of ancient traditions for centuries and has gained popularity in the past few decades because of the new focus on the “green” movement. Holistic remedies feature many cures that can be found within nature and thus contribute to the overall cause relating to the eco-friendly movement. In relation to homeopathy, few if any contain pharmacologically active ingredients and most homeopaths argue against vaccinations and antibiotics. Their entire belief centers around Hahnemann’s original encounter with cinchona bark, which was used to treat malaria during this time; Hahnemann developed the same symptoms which are related to malaria and thereby determined that the actual cure proceeds from a similarity. This led to years of research in which he determined what treatments were able to produce symptoms relating to specific diseases in an effort to prove his “Law of Similars”. He thereby believed that the artificial symptoms would force the main energy to neutralize and expel the original disease by inducing any type of disease through these homeopathic drugs. Additionally, the Law of Similars means that symptoms caused by an overdose of a substance can also be cured with a small dose. This can be easily referenced to the feeling we get when slicing an onion: the runny nose and watery eyes. Many homeopaths would cite this as a good remedy for a patient with a bad cold.
Once Hahnemann arrived upon chronic diseases which he could not cure, he referred to these as miasms which is defined as a “peculiar morbid derangement of the vital force”. He additionally blamed miasms for the underlying cause for many of these particular diseases. Hahnemann stated that upon initial exposure to miasms, a patient would develop symptoms relating to skin or venereal diseases, but through suppression by antibiotics, these diseases would manifest themselves later on as diseases of internal organs. Hahnemann reasoned that the initial, chronic miasm could only be corrected by removing this deeper disturbance.
Not everyone can follow the homeopathic way of life or in treating a disease, but while we have yet to determine the true way which these remedies serve to counteract a disease, homeopaths believe that the remedy acts as a signal to stimulate the body’s self-healing powers. This is obviously an integral part of modern day society, in which many new age modernists are tending to stray away from additives and various chemicals that abound within foods and medicines. The Law of Similars offers a break from such modern ways of living and offers its followers a chance to put something from nature back into their bodies.
